Psi Iota Xi...

Psi Iota Xi is a national philanthropic women's organization dedicated to enrichment through charitable enterprises. It was founded in 1897 in Muncie, Indiana.

In the 1920's, it was the first women's organization to contribute to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, by donating $5,000 to equip a ward. Two oxygen chambers were purchased in 1931 with $10,000 given to Riley, thereby bringing oxygen therapy to Indiana. The support of Riley has continued through the years with concentration in the Audiology and Speech Clinic assisting in the diagnostic and therapeutic problems of children with special needs.

Psi Iota Xi became the first organization in Indiana to recognize the need for speech and hearing correction in children and to appropriate the funds to help these children. The mobile testing unit used by Indiana University in 1938 cost $10,000 and in the three years of its operation saw 10,000 children! Dedication has continued with financial help to young students with hearing handicaps and to prospective speech and hearing therapists as they graduate from high school.

Psi Iota Xi has also shown an interest in cultural endeavors. The Indianapolis Symphony Endowment Fund was established in 1938 and tickets to the symphony were purchased and made available to schools free of charge. The Metropolitan Opera Tri-State Regional Auditions have been supported by Psi Iota Xi since 1963.

The projects and programs undertaken by Psi Iota Xi change from year to year but this flexibility is essential as it allows the needs of the changing world and community to be properly addressed.
